Questions about “little”

Why does little have two t’s?

The double t keeps the i short, so it says “lit”. Your child will see the same idea in bottle and kettle.

My child confuses little and litter. What helps?

Point to the endings: little ends in le, litter ends in er. Reading both in a sentence shows the difference quickly.
