What’s on the “my” worksheet

Read and trace “my”, write it alone, circle it among me, by, may, mud and fly, then trace “This is my bike.”

Prints on A4 or US Letter (choose “Fit to page”).

How to teach “my”

My has a y that says “eye” at the end. Tell your child that y at the end of a short word often borrows the sound of i, as in by and fly. Label a few of your child’s things with “my” sticky notes and read them together.

Sentences with “my”

  • This is my bike.
  • My dog is little.
  • I love my mum.
  • Where is my hat?

Game: My things labels

Give your child five sticky notes with my written on each. They choose five things they own and stick a note on each one, then read “my bed”, “my shoes” and so on. Take a photo of each label.

Practise next

Try “me” and “I” next: they are all about the reader.

Questions about “my”

Why does the y in my say “eye”?

At the end of short words, y often makes the long i sound, like in fly, cry and by. My is usually the first word where children meet this.

My child mixes up my and me. What helps?

Show that my always comes before a thing: my cup. Me usually stands on its own at the end: give it to me.
