What’s on the number 14 worksheet

A dashed 14 with arrows, the word fourteen, ten frames showing 10 + 4, four tracing rows and 14 stars to count and colour.

Prints on A4 or US Letter (choose “Fit to page”).

How to write 14

After the 1, draw the 4 in two strokes. First make a line down and across, like an upside-down L. Then lift the pencil and make the long stick down through the crossbar. An open-top 4 is easier for little hands than a closed triangle.

Ten and four

Hold up ten fingers, then ask a grown-up to hold up four more. Fourteen fingers! The ten is the first digit and the extra four is the second. Moving counters between the two ten frames makes the idea very concrete.

What to watch for

Some children write the 4 as a closed triangle with a tail, which is fine, but check that the crossbar sits on the middle guide line rather than at the bottom. Otherwise the 4 can look like a small h.

Counting idea for fourteen

Two weeks are fourteen days. Mark fourteen squares on a paper strip, one for each day of the next two weeks, and colour one in each evening. Your child sees the number grow day by day.

Game: Star jumps to fourteen

Count fourteen star jumps together, slowing down at ten and then counting the last four in a whisper. Next time do ten hops and four claps. The ten-and-some-more pattern turns into a game your child feels with their whole body.

Where you see 14

Fourteen days in a fortnight, the 14th of the month, and house or bus numbers on your street.

Number 14 questions

What is a fortnight?

A fortnight is two weeks, or fourteen days. It is a handy real-life link for this number, especially if your child is waiting for a birthday or a holiday.

Is it better to write 4 open or closed?

Both are correct. The open 4 on this worksheet is easier to form in two simple strokes, so many schools teach it first.
