How to teach counting 1 to 10
Counting is more than saying numbers in order. Children need to touch or point to each object once, say one number for each, and understand that the last number tells you how many. Model this slowly with toys, then let your child count the pictures on the worksheet. Crossing off or dotting each picture as they count stops them from losing their place.
What to watch for
Children often skip a picture or count one twice, especially when objects are spread out. Encourage them to count in a line from left to right. If they recount and get a different total, praise the checking and count together once more.
Game: Count and jump
Hold up a number card or fingers and ask your child to jump, clap or hop that many times. Then switch: they clap, you count. It builds the link between numbers and amounts.
Everyday practice
Count stairs, buttons, cars on the way to the park, or strawberries in a bowl. Ask your child to fetch a number of things: “Can you bring me four spoons?” Fetching shows they really know what four means.
Questions to ask while they work
- Can you touch each one as you count?
- How many are there altogether?
- Can you show me that many fingers?
Practise next
Try more or less, addition within 5, missing numbers. Practise writing the numbers with number tracing 1 to 10.
Counting 1 to 10 questions
What age do children learn to count objects?
Many children count small groups by 3 and up to ten objects by 4 or 5. Saying numbers in order often comes before counting objects accurately.
Why does my child say numbers but count wrongly?
Matching one number to each object is a separate skill. Pointing, touching or moving each object as you count makes it much easier.
