What are adjectives?

An adjective describes a noun. It tells you more about it: what colour, what size, what shape, how it feels or how it looks. In “a soft teddy”, soft is the adjective. Colour words, size words and feeling words like happy are all adjectives.

Examples

  • Size: big, small, tall, tiny
  • Colour: red, green, yellow, brown
  • Feel: soft, hard, wet, sticky
  • Feelings: happy, sad, cross, sleepy
  • Sound and taste: loud, quiet, sweet, sour

How to teach it

Put a favourite toy in a bag and ask your child to describe it with their hands before they look: soft, fluffy, small. Then take it out and add colour words. Each describing word is an adjective. Encourage two adjectives together, like “a small brown bear”, to make speech and writing richer.

Common mix-ups

Children often circle the noun because it is the most interesting word. Ask “which word tells us more about the dog?” Some words, like light or cold, can be nouns or adjectives, so keep early examples clear.

Game: I spy something…

Play I spy with describing words instead of letters: “I spy something round and red.” Your child guesses, then gives you the next clue using two adjectives.

Questions to ask

  • What does it look like?
  • How does it feel?
  • Can you use two words to describe it?
