What’s in the PDF
- Page 1 (Level 1, easier): a rule box, eight picture cards where children circle he, she, it or they, and six word pairs where they circle the pronoun.
- Page 2 (Level 2, harder): write the right pronoun in five sentences, then rewrite two sentences using a pronoun.
- Page 3: an answer key for both levels.

Read the instructions aloud for early readers. Children can point or say the answer before they write it.
What are pronouns?
A pronoun is a word that we use instead of a noun so we do not have to keep repeating it. Instead of “Mia likes cake. Mia eats cake,” we say “Mia likes cake. She eats cake.” He is for a boy or man, she for a girl or woman, it for a thing or an animal, and they for more than one.
Examples
- he: Dad, Grandpa, the boy, Tom
- she: Mum, Nan, the girl, Mia
- it: the ball, the dog, the bus
- they: the kids, Sam and Ava
- they: the chicks, the kites
How to teach it
Tell a short story that repeats a name too many times: “Ben got up. Ben ate breakfast. Ben brushed Ben’s teeth.” Children quickly hear how silly it sounds. Then tell it again with he and his. Pointing to people and pets in photos and asking “he, she, it or they?” is quick daily practice.
Common mix-ups
Animals can be he or she when we know them well, such as a family pet, but it is fine to use it in these worksheets. Children may forget that two people together are they, not he or she. Some families also use they for one person, which is worth a quick chat.
Game: Pronoun point
Look at a busy picture book page. Say a pronoun, such as “they”, and your child points to something it could mean. Then swap: they point, and you say the pronoun.
Questions to ask
- Who is this sentence about?
- Which word could we use instead of the name?
- Is it one person or more than one?
