What’s on the number 20 worksheet

A dashed 20 with arrows, the word twenty, ten frames showing 10 + 10, four tracing rows and 20 balls to count and colour.

Prints on A4 or US Letter (choose “Fit to page”).

How to write 20

Start with the 2: a hook at the top, a slant down to the bottom left and a flat base. Then lift the pencil and write the 0 next to it, starting at the top and going round anticlockwise until it closes.

Ten and ten

The 2 means two tens and the 0 means no extra ones. Both ten frames are completely full. This is the first time the right-hand digit is zero, so it is worth pausing to talk about what the 0 is doing.

What to watch for

Some children write twenty as 2 and leave out the 0, or write 210 after counting “twenty-ten”. Two full ten frames side by side and the word “two tens” help make sense of the 0.

Counting idea for twenty

Count twenty toes and fingers together, yours or your child’s, ten fingers and ten toes. Then count twenty in twos, tapping two fingers at a time. Children love that the whole body adds up to twenty.

Game: Twenty-ball tidy-up

Scatter twenty balls, socks rolled into balls or scrunched paper around the room. Your child throws them into a basket one by one, counting out loud. When all twenty are in, tip them out, count them into two piles of ten and start again.

Where you see 20

Twenty fingers and toes, a twenty coin or note in many currencies, and 20 at the end of most number charts for young children.

Number 20 questions

Why does twenty have a 0?

Because there are two full tens and no ones left over. The 0 holds the ones place so we know the 2 means two tens, not just two.

What should my child learn after 20?

Try counting to 30, then use a hundreds chart to see the patterns all the way to 100. Our free number charts are a good next step.
