What’s on the “not” worksheet

Read and trace “not”, write it alone, circle it among no, nut, hot, net and note, then trace “It is not hot.”

Prints on A4 or US Letter (choose “Fit to page”).

How to teach “not”

Blend n-o-t and show your child how one tiny word can flip a sentence. Read a sentence, then add not and act out the difference. Shake your head every time you read it so the meaning is clear.

Sentences with “not”

  • It is not cold.
  • I am not sleepy.
  • The dog is not big.
  • Do not run inside.

Game: Yes or not

Read a sentence about your child, for example “you are a cat”. They answer by holding up a card: either yes or not. Then write the correct sentence together: “I am not a cat.”

Practise next

Try “can” and “is” next: they often appear right before not.

Questions about “not”

My child skips not when reading. Is that common?

Very. Ask them to run a finger under every word. Then ask, “Does that make sense?” so they notice when the meaning has changed.

Should I teach not and no together?

They are close in meaning but used differently. Learn not in sentences first, then compare it with no.
