What’s on the “is” worksheet

Read and trace “is”, write it alone, circle it among it, in, his, if and as, then trace “The sun is hot.”

Prints on A4 or US Letter (choose “Fit to page”).

How to teach “is”

Is sounds like “iz”, even though it ends in s. Show your child that s can make a buzzing “z” sound, like in has and his. Practise it inside describing sentences about things you can see right now.

Sentences with “is”

  • The sun is hot.
  • My bag is red.
  • Where is the dog?
  • It is fun to play.

Game: Is it true?

Say a sentence that uses is, such as “the cat is blue”. Your child decides if it is true or silly, then reads the sentence card with you. Swap roles so they make up silly sentences for you to judge.

Practise next

Try “it” and “in” next: they are short i-words that are easy to confuse.

Questions about “is”

Why does is sound like “iz”?

The letter s often makes a z sound at the end of small words, as in is, his and has. Children usually pick this up quickly.

My child mixes up is and it. Any tips?

Ask them to look at the last letter. A snake s is in is, and a tall t is in it. Saying “iz” with a buzz helps too.
