How to teach “it”

Blend i-t together, then show your child how it saves us repeating a word. Say “I see a cat. The cat is…” and then “It is…” Point to the object each time you read it so they learn what it is replacing.

Sentences with “it”

  • It is a big dog.
  • I like it a lot.
  • Can you see it?
  • It is time for lunch.

Game: What is it?

Put a mystery object in a bag. Your child reaches in, feels it, and says a sentence starting with it: “It is soft. It is round.” You write one of their sentences and they find and circle it.

Practise next

Try “is” and “in” next: they make up many first sentences with it.

Questions about “it”

Why does my child read it as at?

The two words look very alike. Ask them to check the middle letter and say the short i sound, like the start of insect.

Should I teach it with a capital letter too?

Yes, because it often starts a sentence. Show both It and it so your child knows they are the same word.
