Lowercase Letter q Tracing Worksheet
Lowercase q is a round letter with a straight tail that drops below the line. In English it is nearly always followed by u.
What’s on the lowercase q worksheet
Big dotted q letters, two tracing rows, the words queen, quack, question and quiet, and a row to circle q among g, p, d.
How to write lowercase q
Start at the dashed line and make a c curve back up to close the circle. Go straight down past the baseline, and add a small flick to the right at the bottom if your handwriting style uses one.
Where q sits on the lines
The round part sits in the middle space and the stick drops below the baseline.
What to watch for
q is often confused with g and p. Remind your child that q starts like c and its tail goes straight down.
Words to trace
👸 queen · 🦆 quack · ❓ question · 🤫 quiet
Activity: Quiet q
Make q the quiet letter: whisper each word that starts with qu while your child traces. Then they draw a little u next to each q to remember that q and u stick together.
Try this at home
Write q and u on two separate cards and clip them together with a paper clip. Your child can carry the pair around and look for qu words in a book.
Same letter family
Round “c” letters: c · o · a · d
Capital Q: letter Q tracing · Joined-up: cursive q
Lowercase q questions
Why does q always come with u?
In English words, q is almost always followed by u, as in queen and quick. Teaching qu as a pair helps reading too.
How is q different from g?
Both drop below the line. q’s tail is straight with a little flick to the right; g’s tail hooks to the left.
