How to Teach Cursive in 5 Steps
- Practise the strokes: undercurves, overcurves and downcurves in the air or on a whiteboard.
- Trace one letter: follow the dots slowly, keeping the pencil on the paper.
- Join a row: trace the same letter joined to itself, like a chain.
- Trace words: try short words that use the letter.
- Write it alone: start on the green dot and write the letter without dots.
A few minutes a day works better than one long session a week.
Cursive letters by stroke group
Teaching cursive letters by their first stroke makes joining much easier:
- Undercurve letters (They start with a swing up from the baseline.): e, i, j, p, r, s, t, u, w
- Downcurve letters (They start with a curve back and down, like c.): a, c, d, g, o, q
- Overcurve letters (They start with a hump that curves over the top.): m, n, v, x, y, z
- Loop letters (They start with a tall loop.): b, f, h, k, l

Frequently Asked Questions
What age should children start cursive?
Many schools introduce cursive at 7 or 8, once print letters are secure. Some children enjoy tracing cursive earlier, and that is fine as long as it stays fun.
Which cursive style do these worksheets use?
The letters use Playwrite US Trad, a free handwriting font from the Playwrite project by TypeTogether, released under the SIL Open Font License. It follows a traditional US school cursive style.
Why are cursive letters taught in stroke groups?
Letters that start with the same stroke, such as the undercurve or the downcurve, are easier to learn together and join more smoothly.
Is cursive good for left-handed children?
Yes. Tilt the paper slightly to the right, hold the pencil a little higher and let the hand sit below the line so the writing stays visible.
Can I use these worksheets in my classroom?
Yes. Every worksheet is free for home and classroom use. Please share the page link rather than re-uploading the PDF.
