How to Teach Lowercase Letters in 5 Steps

  1. Warm up: draw big circles and straight lines in the air or in sand.
  2. Say the sound: say the letter’s sound before tracing it.
  3. Trace with a finger: follow the dots with a finger first, then a crayon.
  4. Trace the rows: go slowly and start each letter in the same place.
  5. Find it: circle the letter in a book, a cereal box or on the worksheet.

Five to ten minutes a day is plenty. Stop while it is still fun.

Lowercase letter families

Teaching letters in families means each new letter builds on a movement your child already knows:

  • Round “c” letters (They all start with the same backwards curve as c.): c, o, a, d, g, q, e
  • Stick letters (They start with a straight line down.): l, i, j, t, f
  • Bump letters (They go down, back up the same line and over a bump.): r, n, m, h, b, p
  • Slant letters (They are made from straight slanting lines.): v, w, x, y, z, k
  • Curvy and cup letters (They change direction or make a cup shape.): s, u

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is lowercase letter tracing for?

Most children are ready at 3 to 5, once they can hold a crayon and copy a circle and a straight line. Follow your child’s interest rather than an exact age.

Should children learn uppercase or lowercase letters first?

Most of the words children read are in lowercase, so many teachers introduce lowercase early. Capitals are easier to draw, so doing both side by side works well.

Why are the lowercase letters grouped into families?

Letters that start with the same movement are easier to learn together. Once your child can make c, letters like a, d and g follow naturally.

Which lowercase letters are the hardest?

b, d, p and q are often mixed up, and s, z and k take practice. Short, regular sessions help more than long ones.
