Lowercase Letter j Tracing Worksheet
Lowercase j is like an i with a tail that dips below the line. It is a favourite with children because of the jolly hook at the bottom.
What’s on the lowercase j worksheet
Big dotted j letters, two tracing rows, the words jam, jellyfish, jeans and juice, and a row to circle j among i, g, y.
How to write lowercase j
Start at the dashed line and pull straight down past the baseline into the space below. Hook the tail to the left at the bottom. Lift the pencil and add a dot above the line.
Where j sits on the lines
The stick starts at the dashed line and drops below the baseline. The dot is in the top space.
What to watch for
Watch for the hook turning right, which makes a backwards j. It always curls to the left like g.
Words to trace
🍓 jam · 🪼 jellyfish · 👖 jeans · 🧃 juice
Activity: Jump into j
Draw a pool below the baseline. Your child traces a j and the tail jumps into the pool. Shout “splash!” each time the pencil hooks at the bottom.
Try this at home
Ask your child to draw a fishing line hanging from a jetty, ending in a hook that curls left. Five of those in a row and they have written five j letters without noticing.
