Saying /w/ clearly

Round your lips into a small circle, as if you are about to whistle, then open them as you use your voice: /w/. It glides quickly into the next sound.

Teaching /w/ step by step

Blow pretend kisses together, then turn them into /w/ sounds: wa, we, wi. Wave each time you hear a word starting with /w/. Look in a mirror to see the round lips. Then do the pictures together, waving at every w picture before circling it.

Words that start with /w/

Wet, web, win, wag, wind, walk, water, window.

Common mix-ups

Words starting with wh, such as whale, sound the same as w words in most accents. They have their own page in our digraphs section, so they are not used here.

Game: Wiggly worms

Cut strips of paper into worms. Your child adds one worm to a pretend garden each time they say a word that starts with /w/. Count the worms at the end.

Around the house

Water, washing and walking: make round lips and wave when you say them.

Say it fast

Wiggly worms wash in warm water.

Writing the letter w

Say /w/ while forming the letter on our capital W and small w sheets. Older children can try joined-up cursive w.

What to try next

Ready for more? letter x and letter y are next in the alphabet. Later, w joins other letters in the wh spelling.

Letter W sound questions

Why isn’t whale on the w page?

Whale is spelled with wh. It sounds like /w/ in most accents, but we practise wh words on the wh digraph page so children do not get mixed up.

Why does my child say w for r?

Saying /w/ for /r/ is a common stage. It does not affect learning the /w/ sound itself.
