Saying /k/ clearly

Lift the back of your tongue to the roof of your mouth, then let go with a puff of air: /k/. It is a quiet sound without voice.

Teaching /k/ step by step

If your child already knows the c page, tell them k is c’s “kicking cousin”: same sound, different letter. Kick a soft ball each time you both say a k word. Use the pictures to practise, then try sorting a few words into c and k piles as a fun challenge for older children.

Words that start with /k/

Kid, kit, keg, kiss, kick, kitten, kettle, kitchen.

Common mix-ups

Children sometimes write c for k words, or k for c words. That is a spelling question, not a sound one. A handy rule for later: k is usually used before e and i (kettle, kite), c before a, o and u (cat, cot, cup).

Game: Kangaroo kicks

Hop like a kangaroo. Say a word: if it starts with /k/, do a big kick. Use both c and k words to show they share a sound, then talk about which letter each one uses.

Around the house

Keys, kitchens and kisses goodnight: three /k/ words to say every day.

Say it fast

Kind kangaroos kick kites to the king.

Writing the letter k

Say /k/ while forming the letter on our capital K and small k sheets. Older children can try joined-up cursive k.

What to try next

Ready for more? letter l and letter m are next in the alphabet. Later, k joins other letters in ck at the end of words.

Letter K sound questions

How do children know whether to write c or k?

They learn it gradually. Early on, any sensible spelling is fine. Later, the rule of k before e and i (kite, kettle) helps.

What about the silent k in knee?

In words like knee and knot, the k is silent. These are learned later as special spellings.
