Saying /n/ clearly
Put the tip of your tongue behind your top teeth, keep your lips open and hum through your nose: /nnn/. Try pinching your nose: the sound stops!
Teaching /n/ step by step
The nose trick works well: hum /nnn/ together, then pinch your noses to feel the sound disappear. Point to your nose each time you hear /n/ at the start of a word. Then look at the pictures, starting with the most familiar (nose and nut) before newer words like needle and noodles.
Words that start with /n/
Nap, net, nod, nut, nip, nine, name, night.
Common mix-ups
Children sometimes mix up /n/ and /m/. A mirror helps: lips stay open for /n/. In writing, the lowercase n has one hump and m has two, so count the humps together.
Game: Noodle nests
Use a piece of string or a cooked noodle to make a nest shape on a plate. Your child places a small toy in the nest for each n word they think of, such as nut, nose and nine.
Around the house
No, not now and night-night: some of the most common words you say start with /n/.
Say it fast
Nine noisy newts nap in a nest.
Writing the letter n
Say /n/ while forming the letter on our capital N and small n sheets. Older children can try joined-up cursive n.

Letter N sound questions
Why is n useful early on?
Many very short words contain n, such as in, an, on, not and can. Hearing the sound clearly helps children read and spell these quickly.
Is the n in knee the same sound?
Yes, the sound is /n/, but it is spelled kn. Children learn spellings like kn much later.
