Sight Word “away” Worksheet – Trace, Write and Find
“Away” is a two-part word that tells us something is leaving or is far off: “the bird flew away”. It is longer than most pre-primer words, so a little extra practice helps.
What’s on the “away” worksheet
Read and trace “away”, write it alone, circle it among way, always, say, day and awake, then trace “The bird flew away.”
Prints on A4 or US Letter (choose “Fit to page”).
How to teach “away”
Clap the two beats of a-way with your child. Point out that the second half is the word way, so they only need to add an a at the front. Act it out by walking away from each other across the room while you both say the word.
Sentences with “away”
- The bird flew away.
- Put your toys away.
- Go away, rain!
- The boat sailed far away.
Game: Away we go
Line up a few soft toys. Say “one toy goes away” and let your child carry one to the other side of the room, then hold up the word card and read it together. Keep going until every toy has gone away, then bring them all back.
Practise next
Try “go” and “come” next: they describe moving, just like away.
Questions about “away”
Why is away on a pre-primer list when it has four letters?
Children hear it all the time in stories and songs. Because it splits neatly into a and way, many children find it easier than it looks.
My child reads it as “a way”. Is that a problem?
Not at all. That shows they spotted the two parts. Just remind them that in books away is written as one word with no space.
