How to teach “went”

Went is decodable, w-e-n-t, but it is the past of go, which looks nothing like it. Make a little travel diary: each page says “We went to…” with a drawing. Read it together after every outing.

Sentences with “went”

  • We went to the zoo.
  • He went to bed early.
  • I went on a big slide.
  • They went home.

Game: Where we went

Lay out place pictures: zoo, park, shop, beach. Your child picks two and tells a mini story: “First we went to the shop. Then we went to the beach.” Write the sentences together.

Practise next

Try “came” and “ran” next: they also tell us what already happened.

Questions about “went”

Why is went the past of go?

English took went from an old word and used it for go. That is why it has to be learned separately.

How is went different from want?

The middle vowel is different. Went is about going in the past; want is about wishing.
