Sight Word “one” Worksheet – Trace, Write and Find
“One” is a number word that does not sound the way it looks: we say “wun”. Because it is so common, children need to learn it by sight.
What’s on the “one” worksheet
Read and trace “one”, write it alone, circle it among on, own, once, none and won, then trace “I have one cat.”
Prints on A4 or US Letter (choose “Fit to page”).
How to teach “one”
Hold up one finger every time you read one together. Tell your child it is a rule-breaker word that starts with a “w” sound even though there is no w. Practise it with the digit 1 so they connect the word and the number.
Sentences with “one”
- I have one cat.
- One bird sat on a tree.
- Give me one more.
- I see one red car.
Game: One-snap
Make pairs of cards: the digit 1, the word one, and a picture of one object, plus a few other numbers. Turn them over one at a time. When two cards that mean one appear together, your child says “snap, one!”
Practise next
Try “two” and “three” next: they are the other number words on the list.
Questions about “one”
Why does one sound like “wun”?
The spelling is very old and the sound changed over time. It is a classic sight word, which is why it is practised by sight.
Should I teach one, two and three together?
Yes. Counting words make a natural group. This set includes one, two and three, so your child can practise them side by side.
