How to teach “two”

Two sounds like “too”, but has a silent w. Help your child remember it by linking the w to two: twins, twice and twenty all start with tw and are about two. Hold up two fingers each time you read it.

Sentences with “two”

  • I have two hands.
  • Two birds can sing.
  • I see two red cars.
  • Give me two apples.

Game: Pairs hunt

Your child walks around the house looking for things that come in twos: shoes, socks, gloves, chopsticks. For each pair they find, they read the word card two and place it next to the pair.

Practise next

Try “one” and “three” next: they complete the number words in the set.

Questions about “two”

Why is there a w in two?

The w is left over from an old spelling. Words like twin and twelve keep the w sound, so it is a nice link to show your child.

How do I stop my child writing to instead of two?

Remind them that the number two always has a w in the middle, like two sides of a W.
