How to teach “up”

Blend u-p, then reach up high every time you read it. Pair it with its opposite, down, so your child has two movement words to act out. Point out that up is one of the few words that starts with the short u sound, like in umbrella.

  • Look up at the sky.
  • Jump up and down.
  • The balloon went up.
  • We go up the hill.

Game: Up and down Simon

Play a reading version of Simon says. Hold up a card that says up or down. Your child reaches up or crouches down to match. Speed up, and add the words jump and run for a challenge.

Practise next

Try “down” and “jump” next: they make movement games easy.

Questions about “up”

My child reads up as “pu”. What helps?

Ask them to run a finger under the word from left to right and say the first sound first. The short u, like in umbrella, comes before the p.

Should I teach up with down?

Yes. Opposites help each other. The two words have very different shapes, so they are easy to tell apart.
