Sight Word “brown” Worksheet – Trace, Write and Find
“Brown” is the colour of chocolate, bears and muddy puddles. Children use it all the time when they draw and colour, which makes it a useful word to read.
What’s on the “brown” worksheet
Read and trace “brown”, write it alone, circle it among crown, down, brow, frown and drown, then trace “The bear is brown.”
Prints on A4 or US Letter (choose “Fit to page”).
How to teach “brown”
The tricky part is the ow in the middle, which says /ow/ as in “ow, I bumped my knee”. Act it out with a pretend bump. Then blend br-ow-n. Collect brown things in a basket, like a pine cone, a teddy and a spoon, and label the basket with the word.
Sentences with “brown”
- The bear is brown.
- I like brown bread.
- My shoes are brown.
- A brown owl hoots.
Game: Brown bear walk
Read a page of a picture book about a brown bear, then walk around the house like a bear. Every time you find something brown, your child holds the word card next to it and says “brown ___”. Count how many you find.
Practise next
Try “black” and “white” next: they are the other primer colour words.
Questions about “brown”
Why does brown have an ow sound?
The letters ow can say /ow/ as in cow and down, or /oh/ as in snow. In brown they say /ow/.
My child reads brown as down. What helps?
Both have ow, so it is a fair guess. Cover the ow and ask what sound the word starts with: br, not d.
