How to teach “black”

Black can be sounded out once your child knows that b and l blend into bl and that c and k together make one sound. Show the ck ending with a sticky note. Then go on a colour hunt and name black things around the house in full phrases.

Sentences with “black”

  • The black cat sleeps.
  • I have black boots.
  • The sky is black at night.
  • A black dog ran past.

Game: Black and white snap

Make pairs of cards: half say black, half say white, and a few say blue or back. Play snap, but you may only snap when both cards say black. Children have to read carefully instead of guessing from the first letter.

Practise next

Try “brown” and “white” next: they are the other primer colour words, so your child can learn them as a set.
