How to teach “be”

Blend b-e and point out that this e says its name, like in he, me and we. Make a little family of these words on cards. Then practise kind commands that start with be: be quiet, be gentle, be quick. Your child can act each one out.

Sentences with “be”

  • Be kind to your friends.
  • I will be a pirate.
  • It will be sunny.
  • Be quick, the bus is here!

Game: Simon says be…

Play Simon says with be: “Simon says be a frog!”, “Simon says be tall!” Write each command on a card and let your child read it to you, so they are the one giving the orders.

Practise next

Try “he” and “she” next: they end with the same long e sound, so they are easy to learn as a set.

Questions about “be”

Why does the e in be sound long?

When e is the only vowel at the end of a short word, it usually says its name. He, me, we and she work the same way.

My child confuses be and bee. Is that a problem?

No, they sound the same. Draw a little bee next to bee and a heart next to be (be kind) to keep them apart.
