How to teach “brown”

The tricky part is the ow in the middle, which says /ow/ as in “ow, I bumped my knee”. Act it out with a pretend bump. Then blend br-ow-n. Collect brown things in a basket, like a pine cone, a teddy and a spoon, and label the basket with the word.

Game: Brown bear walk

Questions about “brown”

Why does brown have an ow sound?

The letters ow can say /ow/ as in cow and down, or /oh/ as in snow. In brown they say /ow/.

My child reads brown as down. What helps?

Both have ow, so it is a fair guess. Cover the ow and ask what sound the word starts with: br, not d.
