Big dotted y letters, two tracing rows, the words yo-yo, yak, yoghurt and yawn, and a row to circle y among v, g, j.

How to write lowercase y

Start at the dashed line on the left and slant down to the middle of the space. Lift the pencil, start at the dashed line on the right and slant all the way down past the baseline, crossing the first line.

Where y sits on the lines

The top part sits in the middle space and the long line drops below the baseline.

What to watch for

Watch for both lines stopping at the baseline, which makes v. The long line must dip below.

Words to trace

🪀 yo-yo · 🐃 yak · 🥣 yoghurt · 🥱 yawn

Activity: Yo-yo y

Hang a yo-yo or a bead on a string. As it drops, your child traces the long line of y down below the baseline. Count how many times you can make it drop.

Try this at home

Hang a bead on a piece of string and let it swing down below a line taped to the table. That drop below the line is the tail of y.
