The “does” page at a glance
Children trace “does”, write it from memory, hunt for it among goes, dose, do, toes and dogs, and finish by tracing “Does a cat bark?”.
Helping your child learn “does”
Does is very tricky: it looks like it should rhyme with goes, but it sounds like “duz”. Write do and does together and show that does is do plus es with a surprising sound. Practise with questions: does a fish swim? Does a dog fly? Your child answers yes or no.
Example sentences
- Does a cat bark?
- She does a dance.
- What does it say?
- He does his best.
Play Does it…?
Ask silly questions: does a cow say quack? Does a car have wheels? Your child shouts yes or no and holds up the does card. Then they ask you.
On the Dolch second grade list, “does” sits at number 11 of 46. Children often learn it between ages 7–8, building on the first grade words.
Where to go next
After this one, move on to “goes” and “don’t” (goes looks similar but sounds different, and don’t is another do word).
