Children trace “five”, write it from memory, hunt for it among fire, fine, give, hive and four, and finish by tracing “I have five fingers.”.

Helping your child learn “five”

Five has the i-e pattern: the e at the end makes the i say its name, as in bike and hive. Hold up five fingers and count them. Then make groups of five with toys, coins or stickers. Write the numeral 5 next to the word so your child links the two.

Play Grab five

Put a pile of small objects in front of your child. Show a card with a number word and they grab that many. Use five often and mix in one, two, three and four.

Example sentences

  • I have five fingers.
  • Give me a high five!
  • Five ducks swam away.
  • She is five years old.
