Quick game – Its or it’s?

Read short sentences aloud. Your child holds up an its card or an it’s card. Check by trying “it is” in the sentence: does it make sense?

A simple way to teach “its”

Its is easy to sound out but easy to confuse with it’s (it is). Teach the rule simply: if you can say “it is” instead, use it’s; if it means “belonging to it”, use its. Practise with a pet or a toy: the cat licked its paw, the car lost its wheel.

Read these together

  • The dog wags its tail.
  • The bird is in its nest.
  • The tree lost its leaves.
  • The car has its lights on.

FAQ: “its”

What is the difference between its and it’s?

Its means belonging to it (the cat ate its food). It’s is short for it is or it has (it’s raining).

Why doesn’t its have an apostrophe?

Like his and hers, its shows ownership without an apostrophe. The apostrophe in it’s shows a missing letter.
