A simple way to teach “their”

Their is one of the trickiest words in English because of there and they’re. Teach a memory trick: their has “heir” inside it, and an heir owns things. Use it with groups of toys: the bears ate their honey, the cars are in their garage. Leave there and they’re for separate practice.

Quick game – Whose is it?

Put toys in two groups, like bears and bunnies, and give each group some items. Ask whose items they are. Your child answers with “their” and points: those are their carrots.

Keep going

Next up: “your” and “these” – your also shows ownership, and these points to a group.

FAQ: “their”

How do I explain their, there and they’re?

Their shows ownership (their cat). There is a place (over there). They’re is short for they are. Teach one at a time.

Why is the ei in their unusual?

It is an old spelling. Most words with ei do not sound like air, so their is best learned by sight.
