The “live” page at a glance
Children trace “live”, write it from memory, hunt for it among give, five, love, lime and olive, and finish by tracing “Fish live in water.”.
On the Dolch first grade list, “live” sits at number 23 of 41. Children often learn it between ages 6–7, building on the primer words.
Example sentences
- I live in a house.
- Fish live in water.
- Where do you live?
- Bees live in a hive.
Helping your child learn “live”
Live is like give: the e at the end does not change the i sound. Remind your child that words do not end in v, so an e is added. Then talk about where animals live: a bird lives in a nest, a bee lives in a hive. Draw lines from animals to their homes.
Play Who lives here?
Draw a few homes: a nest, a hive, a pond, a house. Name an animal or person and your child points to where it lives, saying “a frog lives in a pond”.
Where to go next
After this one, move on to “give” and “old” (give works the same way, and old is another describing word for living things).
Parents ask about “live”
Does live always sound the same?
No. Live can also rhyme with five, as in a live show. In early reading, children usually meet the short i version (I live here).
Why does live end in e?
English words do not end in v, so a silent e follows it. Give and have work the same way.
