Game: A bag of…

Fill bags or bowls with small items. Your child picks one and says a phrase: a bag of buttons, a bowl of beads. Write each phrase on a strip of paper and read them back.

How to teach “of”

Of is a real rule-breaker: the f says /v/ and the o says “u”. Tell your child it is a tricky word that does not play fair, then practise it inside phrases rather than alone: a box of toys, a slice of cake, a bag of apples. Phrases help it stick.

Sentences with “of”

  • I want a cup of milk.
  • We ate lots of grapes.
  • Look at the top of the tree.
  • A box of toys.

Try “off” and “from” next: off looks very similar, and from is another small position word.

Questions about “of”

Why does of sound like uv?

The spelling is very old and the pronunciation has changed. It is one of the most common words, so learning it by sight is the best plan.

My child confuses of and off. What helps?

Off has two f’s and says /f/. Of has one f and says /v/. Off is on the second grade list, so teach them side by side later.
