How to teach “stop”

Stop is regular and starts with the st blend: s-t-o-p. Blend it slowly, then quickly. Point out stop signs on walks, and talk about the colour and shape. Then play musical statues using a stop card instead of turning off the music.

Game: Stop and go

Make a stop card and a go card. Your child walks, runs or hops around the room and must freeze when you show stop. Then they hold the cards and you move.

Practise next

Try “open” and “walk” next: open is also seen on signs, and walk is what we do when the light says go.
