How to teach “no”

Blend n-o and point out that the o says its name, like in go and so. Draw a simple stop sign and write No! inside it. Then ask silly yes-or-no questions, like “Do fish wear hats?”, and let your child answer by holding up the word card.

Sentences with “no”

  • No, thank you.
  • There is no milk left.
  • No dogs in the shop.
  • Oh no, it is raining!

Game: Yes or no race

Put a yes card on one side of the room and a no card on the other. Ask questions like “Is the sky green?” Your child runs to the right card and reads it aloud. Let them ask you some questions too.

Practise next

Try “yes” and “on” next: yes is its opposite, and on uses the same two letters in a different order.
