Lowercase Letter a Tracing Worksheet
Lowercase a is in more words than almost any other letter, so getting its shape right early pays off in every sentence your child writes.
What’s on the lowercase a worksheet
Big dotted a letters, two tracing rows, the words ant, axe, avocado and anchor, and a row to circle a among o, d, e.
How to write lowercase a
Start at the top of the middle space, a little right of where the circle will be. Curve back and around like the letter c, close the circle, then go straight up and back down the right side without lifting the pencil.
Where a sits on the lines
The whole letter sits in the middle space, between the dashed line and the baseline. Nothing goes up into the top space.
What to watch for
Watch for a gap between the circle and the stick. If the stick floats away, the a can look like o and i side by side.
Words to trace
🐜 ant · 🪓 axe · 🥑 avocado · ⚓ anchor
Activity: Clock-face circles
Draw a big clock face and start each circle at the number 2, curving back towards 12. That is exactly where lowercase a begins. Do five circles, then add the stick to turn each one into an a.
Try this at home
Hunt for a on food packets at breakfast: it is in banana, pasta and jam. Each time your child spots one, they trace it on the table with a finger before you move on to the next box.
Same letter family
Round “c” letters: c · o · d · g
Capital A: letter A tracing · Joined-up: cursive a
Lowercase a questions
Should my child learn the round a or the printed a with a hook on top?
Start with the round, single-storey a. It is the shape used in most early handwriting programmes and is easier to form.
Why does my child start the a at the bottom?
Many children do at first. Put a small green dot at the start point on a few practice letters until the habit changes.
