What’s on the letter G worksheet

  • Trace: a big dotted G and g, then a row of Gg pairs, next to the key picture (goat).
  • Circle: 12 pictures to say aloud. 6 of them start with /g/: gift, guitar, gorilla, ghost, garlic and goose.
  • Match: draw a line from 4 pictures to their first sounds.
  • Page 2: the answer key, with the name of every picture and tips for grown-ups.

How to say the /g/ sound

Lift the back of your tongue to the roof of your mouth, just like /k/, but use your voice: /g/. Children can feel a little rumble in their throat.

How to teach the letter g sound

Put your hands on your throats and say /k/ and /g/ one after the other: the /g/ has a buzz. Then gulp like a goldfish and say g-g-goat. Look at the pictures together and gargle a pretend drink each time you find a g word. Laughing is allowed!

More /g/ words to say together

Gum, gap, got, gas, goal, game, garden, gorilla.

Watch out for

The letter g has a soft sound too, as in giraffe and gem. That is why no giraffe appears on this page. If your child suggests giraffe as a g word, tell them they are right about the letter, and that it uses g’s other sound.

Game: Gift wrap guess

Wrap a few small objects in paper or put them in a bag. Your child feels one, guesses what it is, then decides whether its name starts with /g/. Unwrap to check.

Everyday practice

Gates, gloves, the garden and the garbage or rubbish bin all give you a quick /g/ to point out.

Tongue twister

Gus the goat got a gift of gum.

Trace and write the letter g

Practise writing the letter too: uppercase G tracing, lowercase g tracing and cursive g.

Practise next

Next, try letter h and letter i. Later, g joins other letters in blends like gr.

Letter G sound questions

Why isn’t giraffe on the g page?

Giraffe starts with a soft g that sounds like /j/. This page practises the hard /g/ of goat, which is the more common sound for beginners.

My child says “dood” for good. Is that normal?

Swapping /g/ for /d/ is a common stage in young children’s speech. Model the word clearly and it usually changes on its own.
