- Section 3: picture-to-sound matching for four first sounds.
- Answer key: picture names, answers and quick tips.
Mouth position for /f/
Rest your top teeth gently on your bottom lip and blow: /fff/. No voice is needed, just air, like a flat tyre slowly going down.
Ways to practise the /f/ sound
Hold a feather or a tissue in front of your mouth and say /fff/ together. Watch it move! Then say a few words with a stretched /f/ at the start (fffish, fffox) and ask your child to point to the matching picture on the worksheet. Swap: they say the word and you guess which picture.
Extra /f/ words
Fan, fig, fun, fit, fog, farm, face, family.
Tricky bits
Children sometimes say /f/ for th, so thumb can sound like “fumb”. This is a normal stage of speech. On this page, keep the focus on true f words.
Game: Funny fish
Make a fishing rod from a stick and string with a paperclip hook. Put picture cards on the floor, some f and some not. Your child fishes for one card at a time and keeps it only if it starts with /f/.
Little and often
Feet, fingers, forks and food all start with /f/. Wiggle your fingers when you say the sound.
A silly sentence to try
Five funny fish found a feather.

Letter F sound questions
Why does my child say f for th?
It is a very common speech pattern in young children and usually fades by around age 6 or 7. If you are worried, check with a speech and language professional.
Is ph the same as f?
Yes, in words like phone the letters ph make the /f/ sound. That is something to learn later. Beginners only need the letter f.
