“Was” is one of the most common words in stories: “Once upon a time there was…”, “it was sunny”. It is also one of the most often confused.
What’s on the “was” worksheet
Read and trace “was”, write it alone, circle it among saw, as, wax, has and wag, then trace “It was a sunny day.”
Prints on A4 or US Letter (choose “Fit to page”).
How to teach “was”
Was sounds like “wuz”, so it cannot be sounded out letter by letter. Write was and saw on two cards and show how they are mirror words. Tell a short story together that starts with “There was a…” and point to the word every time.
