Sight Word “are” Worksheet – Trace, Write and Find
“Are” is a busy little word that joins people or things to what they are like: “we are friends”, “the apples are red”. It does not sound the way it is spelled, so it needs extra practice.
What’s on the “are” worksheet
Read and trace “are”, write it alone, circle it among ear, era, arm, art and care, then trace “We are friends.”
Prints on A4 or US Letter (choose “Fit to page”).
How to teach “are”
Say are and listen together: it sounds like the letter name R, and the final e is silent. Tell your child the e is a “quiet tail”. Use it with plural words they know: dogs are, cats are, we are. A good trick is to ask questions and answer in full sentences: “Are you hungry?” “Yes, I am!”
Sentences with “are”
- We are best friends.
- The apples are red.
- Are you ready?
- They are at the park.
Game: Are you a…?
One player hides a picture card and the other asks questions with are: “Are you an animal? Are you big?” Each yes or no answer gives a clue. Write every question on a whiteboard so your child sees are again and again.
Practise next
Try “was” and “they” next: both work with are in everyday sentences about people and things.
Questions about “are”
Why is there an e at the end of are?
English spelling kept the e from older forms of the word. It is silent, so treat are as a word to learn by sight.
My child reads are as ear. What helps?
Point to the first letter and ask what sound it starts with. Then read it in a short phrase, “we are”, so the meaning guides them.
