“Off” is the opposite of on: turn the light off, take your shoes off, jump off the step. It has a double f.
The “off” page at a glance
Children trace “off”, write it from memory, hunt for it among of, oft, on, if and offer, and finish by tracing “Take off your shoes.”.
Helping your child learn “off”
Off can be sounded out, o-f, with a short o. The double f is the key difference from of. Write of and off side by side and say both: “uv” and “off”. Then play with light switches (with supervision): on, off, on, off. Your child reads the card each time.
Example sentences
- Turn off the light.
- Take off your shoes.
- The cat jumped off the bed.
- The TV is off.
Play On and off
Call out on or off with an action: hats on, hats off, shoes on, lights off. Your child acts it out and holds up the matching card.
On the Dolch second grade list, “off” sits at number 23 of 46. Children often learn it between ages 7–8, building on the first grade words.
Where to go next
After this one, move on to “of” and “open” (of looks very similar, and open is about switching too).
