Pentagon Shape Worksheet
A pentagon has five straight sides and five corners. “Penta” means five, which makes it easy to remember. A house shape in a child’s drawing, with its pointed roof, is often a pentagon. This page has tracing, dot-joining, drawing and a pentagon hunt.
What’s on the pentagon worksheet
A big pentagon and its name to trace, a row of pentagons, dots to join, a space to draw and a mix of 15 shapes where your child finds and colours every pentagon.
What makes a pentagon a pentagon?
The pentagon on this worksheet is a regular pentagon: all five sides are the same length and all five corners are the same. Pentagons can also be uneven, like a house shape with a tall roof, as long as there are exactly five straight sides.
Pentagon shapes in real life
- A simple house shape with a pointed roof
- The panels on many classic footballs
- Some road signs and badges
- The base of some sandpit or shed roofs
- Slices of okra and the inside of a cut apple (a five-point star of seeds)
How to draw a pentagon
Start at the top point. Slide down to the right, then down again to the bottom right corner, along the bottom, up to the left side and back to the top. Five sides: count them aloud as you draw.
Activity: Five-finger pentagon
Spread one hand flat on paper and put a dot at the tip of each finger. Your child joins the five dots with straight lines to make a pentagon. Count the sides and the corners, then compare with the number of fingers.
Pentagon or not?
Pentagons and hexagons look alike to young eyes. Counting sides is the only sure way to tell. Tap each side with a finger and count: five sides is a pentagon, six is a hexagon.
