Triangle Shape Worksheet
A triangle has three straight sides and three corners. It is the shape of a slice of pizza, a roof and a road sign. This worksheet lets your child trace a big triangle, join three dots, draw their own and find every triangle.
What’s on the triangle worksheet
A big triangle and its name to trace, a row of triangles, dots to join, a space to draw and a mix of 15 shapes where your child finds and colours every triangle.
What makes a triangle a triangle?
Triangles come in many forms: tall and thin, short and wide, or with all three sides equal. They are all triangles as long as there are exactly three straight sides joined at three corners. Turning one upside down does not change what it is.
Triangle shapes in real life
- A slice of pizza or a sandwich cut corner to corner
- The roof of a house in a picture book
- A warning sign at the roadside
- A coat hanger
- A tortilla chip or a slice of cake
How to draw a triangle
Start at the top point. Slide down to the bottom left corner, stop, go straight along the bottom, stop, then slide back up to the top. Saying “down, across, up” helps children remember the order of the three lines.
Activity: Stick triangles
Give your child three lolly sticks, straws or pencils and see if they can make a triangle on the table. Then try with sticks of different lengths. Every time three sticks meet at three corners, they have made a triangle.
Triangle or not?
Children sometimes only accept triangles that point upwards. Show them triangles turned on their side or upside down, like a pizza slice, so they learn that the number of sides matters, not the direction.

Triangle questions
Is a triangle still a triangle if it is upside down?
Yes. A triangle is any shape with three straight sides and three corners, whichever way it points. Turning shapes around is great practice for young children.
Why are triangles used in bridges and roofs?
A triangle keeps its shape when you push on it, so it makes structures strong. You can test this with straws and paper clips: a square wobbles, but a triangle stays firm.
