What’s on the square worksheet

A big square and its name to trace, a row of squares, dots to join, a space to draw and a mix of 15 shapes where your child finds and colours every square.

What makes a square a square?

The four corners of a square are right angles, like the corner of a book. Because all four sides are equal, a square looks the same if you turn it a quarter of the way round. Children often check this by measuring sides with a finger or a piece of string.

Square shapes in real life

  • A slice of sandwich bread or a cracker
  • Windows split into panes
  • Tiles on a bathroom wall or floor
  • A chessboard and each square on it
  • Sticky notes and some napkins

How to draw a square

Start at the top left corner. Go along the top, stop, then straight down, stop, along the bottom and back up to the start. Stopping at each corner is the key: corners are made by changing direction, not by curving.

Activity: Square hunt with a frame

Cut a square window out of a piece of card. Your child walks around the house holding it up to things that might be square: a tile, a cushion, a picture frame. Do the sides line up with the window? It is a square!

Square or not?

Squares and rectangles both have four corners, but a rectangle has two long sides and two short ones. Fold a square napkin in half and it becomes a rectangle, which is a neat way to show the difference.

Square questions

Is a square a rectangle?

Yes. A rectangle is any four-sided shape with four square corners, and a square is a special rectangle with all four sides equal. For young children, it is fine to keep them as separate names at first.

Why does my child draw squares with rounded corners?

Making sharp corners means stopping and changing direction, which takes control. Tracing the dashed square and saying “stop” at each corner helps a lot.
