Meet the vegetables

Carrot
Carrots are crunchy orange roots that grow under the ground.

Tomato
Tomatoes are red and juicy. We use them in sauces, salads and chutneys.

Potato
Potatoes grow under the ground. We make chips, fries and aloo sabzi from them.

Onion
Cutting an onion can make you cry! It has many thin layers inside.

Brinjal
A brinjal (eggplant) is shiny and purple, with a green cap on top.

Cauliflower
A cauliflower is a big white head of tiny flower buds, wrapped in green leaves.

Cabbage
A cabbage is a tight ball of leaves, wrapped round and round.

Peas
Peas grow in pods. Pop a pod open to find little green balls inside.

Okra
Okra (bhindi or ladyfinger) is long and green, with tiny seeds inside.

Cucumber
Cucumbers are cool and full of water. Great on a hot day!

Pumpkin
Pumpkins are big and orange. Their seeds are tasty when roasted.

Capsicum
A capsicum (bell pepper) can be red, yellow or green. It is hollow inside.

Radish
A radish is a crunchy root. Some are pink and round, some are long and white (mooli).

Corn
Corn grows on a cob in rows of yellow kernels. Popcorn is made from corn!

Broccoli
Broccoli looks like a little green tree. It is full of goodness.
Tips for little cooks
- Ages 3–4: play the quiz, then find two of the vegetables in your kitchen and name them together.
- Ages 5–6: sort them by colour (red tomato, orange carrot, purple brinjal, green peas) or by where they grow: under the ground or above it.
- Ages 7–8: talk about which part of the plant we eat: roots (carrot, radish), leaves (cabbage), seeds (peas, corn), flower buds (cauliflower, broccoli).
- Wrong answers are fine. The quiz waits for the right one, and only first tries count towards the stars.
Questions from parents
What age is this vegetable quiz for?
Children aged about 3 to 8. Younger children enjoy the pictures with a grown-up; older children can read the names and play alone.
Why are some vegetables called by two names?
Many vegetables have different names around the world. Brinjal is also called eggplant or aubergine, capsicum is called bell pepper, and okra is called bhindi or ladyfinger.
Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable?
Scientists call a tomato a fruit, because it has seeds inside, but in the kitchen we cook and eat it like a vegetable. Cucumbers, pumpkins and brinjals are the same!
Is it free, and do we need an account?
Yes, it is free and there is nothing to sign up for. It works in the browser on phones, tablets and computers.
