What’s on the heart worksheet

A big heart and its name to trace, a row of hearts, dots to join, a space to draw and a mix of 15 shapes where your child finds and colours every heart.

What makes a heart a heart?

A heart shape is made from two curves that meet at a dip in the middle at the top and a point at the bottom. It is symmetrical: fold it down the middle and both halves match exactly. The shape is a symbol and does not look like a real human heart.

Heart shapes in real life

  • Greeting cards and friendship notes
  • Heart-shaped cookies or pancakes
  • Some leaves and petals
  • Stickers, balloons and hair clips
  • The suit of hearts in a pack of cards

How to draw a heart

Start at the dip in the middle of the top. Curve up and round to the left like half a balloon and slide down to the point. Go back to the start and do the same on the right side. Two halves that meet at the bottom.

Activity: Fold-and-cut hearts

Fold a piece of paper in half. Draw half a heart against the fold, like a big letter C with a pointed bottom, and help your child cut it out. Open it up to find a whole, perfectly matched heart.

Heart or not?

Hearts drawn by young children often come out lopsided or without a point. That is part of learning. Folding paper hearts shows them that both sides should match.

Heart questions

Why does the heart shape not look like a real heart?

The heart shape is a symbol that people have used for hundreds of years. A real heart is a muscle with a different shape, which can be a fun thing to look up together.

Is a heart a geometric shape?

Not in the way a square or triangle is, because it has curves and no fixed measurements. It is still a great shape for practising curves, symmetry and pencil control.
