Sight Word “am” Worksheet – Trace, Write and Find
“Am” is a tiny word children use to talk about themselves: “I am four”, “I am happy”. It almost always comes straight after I.
What’s on the “am” worksheet
Read and trace “am”, write it alone, circle it among an, ma, map, arm and ham, then trace “I am happy.”
Prints on A4 or US Letter (choose “Fit to page”).
How to teach “am”
Am is completely decodable, a-m, so let your child blend it first. Then pair it with I on two cards and practise flipping them: I am. Make it personal by finishing the sentence with your child’s name, age or favourite animal.
Sentences with “am”
- I am five.
- I am a fast runner.
- Am I late?
- I am happy today.
Game: I am a statue
Play music and dance. When it stops, freeze like a statue and hold up a card that says “I am a…”. Your child chooses a picture card to finish it, such as cat, robot or tree, and reads the whole sentence before the music starts again.
Practise next
Try “are” and “was” next: they are other forms of the same verb, so children meet them in similar sentences.
Questions about “am”
Is am a sight word if it can be sounded out?
Yes. It is on the Dolch list because it appears so often, not because it is hard. Being able to sound it out just makes it a quick win.
What is the difference between am and an?
Only the last letter. Practise both side by side: I am, an apple. Ask your child to feel their lips close for the m.
