What’s on the rectangle worksheet

A big rectangle and its name to trace, a row of rectangles, dots to join, a space to draw and a mix of 15 shapes where your child finds and colours every rectangle.

What makes a rectangle a rectangle?

The opposite sides of a rectangle match: the two long sides are the same length, and so are the two short sides. Like a square, every corner is a right angle. A rectangle can lie flat like a bed or stand up tall like a door.

Rectangle shapes in real life

  • A door or a fridge
  • A book, a tablet or a phone screen
  • A bed, a mattress or a table top
  • A bar of chocolate and each piece
  • Envelopes, cereal box fronts and photos

How to draw a rectangle

Start at the top left. Draw a long line across the top, stop, a short line down, stop, a long line back along the bottom, then a short line up to the start. Long, short, long, short.

Activity: Build a block wall

Use building blocks, sponges or boxes that are rectangles and build a wall with them, the way bricks are laid. Count the long and short sides on one block, then see how the rectangles fit together without gaps.

Rectangle or not?

The most common mix-up is with a square. Lay a square sticky note on a book cover and ask which one is longer one way than the other. Measuring with fingers or string makes the difference easy to see.

Rectangle questions

What is the difference between a square and a rectangle?

Both have four straight sides and four square corners. In a square all four sides are the same length; in a rectangle the sides come in two pairs, long and short.

Is a rectangle still a rectangle when it stands up?

Yes. Turning a rectangle on its end does not change it. A door and a bed are both rectangles, one standing and one lying down.
