Star Shape Worksheet

A star has five points and ten straight sides, with corners that poke out and corners that tuck in. It is one of the most loved shapes to draw. Your child traces a big star, joins the dots, draws their own and finds every star.

What’s on the star worksheet

A big star and its name to trace, a row of stars, dots to join, a space to draw and a mix of 15 shapes where your child finds and colours every star.

What makes a star a star?

The star on this sheet is a five-pointed star: five outer points and five inner corners between them. Stars can have more points, like six or eight, but five is the classic shape used on stickers, wands and reward charts.

Star shapes in real life

  • Star stickers on a reward chart
  • The top of a festive tree or a party wand
  • Starfish at the seaside
  • A slice of star fruit (carambola)
  • Stars on many flags

How to draw a star

Start at the top point. Slide down to an inner corner, out to a point on the right, in again, and keep zigzagging round until you are back at the top. Going slowly and stopping at every corner keeps the points sharp.

Activity: Starfish sand drawing

Pour a thin layer of salt, sand or rice on a tray. Your child draws a star with a finger, then shakes the tray gently to erase it and tries again. Count the points out loud each time: one, two, three, four, five.

Star or not?

Stars are often drawn with too many or too few points. Counting the points together after drawing is a gentle way to check, and it doubles as counting practice.

Star questions

How can young children draw a star?

Joining dots is the easiest start, as on this worksheet. Later they can try the one-line star, drawing five straight lines that cross, which is harder but fun.

Are stars in the sky really star-shaped?

No. Real stars are huge balls of glowing gas. They look like twinkling points because they are so far away, and people drew them with points to show their sparkle.
