Hexagon Shape Worksheet
A hexagon has six straight sides and six corners. Bees build their honeycomb from hexagons, and many floor tiles and nuts and bolts use the shape too. Your child traces a big hexagon, joins six dots, draws their own and hunts for hexagons.
What’s on the hexagon worksheet
A big hexagon and its name to trace, a row of hexagons, dots to join, a space to draw and a mix of 15 shapes where your child finds and colours every hexagon.
What makes a hexagon a hexagon?
A regular hexagon has six equal sides and six equal corners. Hexagons fit together without any gaps, which is why bees use them for honeycomb and why they make strong, tidy tile patterns. “Hexa” means six.
Hexagon shapes in real life

- The head of a nut or a bolt in a toolbox
- Pencils with flat sides, seen from the end
- Snowflakes, which have six points
How to draw a hexagon
Start at the top left corner. Go along the flat top, then slant down to the right point, slant in to the bottom right, go along the flat bottom, slant out to the left point and back up to the start. Flat, slant, slant, flat, slant, slant.
Activity: Honeycomb pattern
Draw around a hexagon-shaped object, or cut several hexagons from card, and fit them together on a sheet to make a honeycomb. Your child can colour each cell yellow and add bees. Notice that no gaps are left.
Hexagon or not?
Hexagons are often confused with pentagons and circles when drawn quickly. Counting sides aloud while tracing builds the habit of checking, which is the most useful shape skill of all.

Hexagon questions
Why do bees use hexagons?
Hexagons fit together without gaps and use the least wax to hold the most honey. Scientists have studied honeycomb for centuries because it is so efficient.
What does hexa mean?
Hexa comes from the Greek word for six. A hexagon has six sides, just as a hexapod, such as an insect, has six legs.
